Weather stations were once large, ugly, stationary devices. That has changed dramatically. Today, there are a variety of small weather stations available for different purposes in the home. Almost all of them are able to take advantage of wireless technology and use remote sensors to gather information.
A remote weather sensor is a small device that is usually mounted or set down in an area where it can transmit collected weather data to a central unit. What that data is depends on the sensor, of course.
